For a “simple, sturdy and utilitarian” option, he chose Restoration Hardware’s salvaged-wood kitchen island. Whereas the Conrad kitchen island, from Pottery Barn, he said, “is higher up, so you can sit around it,” if that’s what you’re looking for.

“Did I tell you about my parents’ kitchen island?” John DeLucie said as he inspected the ones on display at the Williams-Sonoma store at Columbus Circle in Manhattan. “They combined three rooms on the main floor of our house and created a huge kitchen with an island so big we can all work on it at one time.”As the chef and proprietor of the Lion and Crown restaurants and, as of last month, the chef at the King Cole Bar and Salon in the St. Regis New York, Mr. DeLucie, 52, clearly knows his way around a kitchen. He also has very specific ideas about what makes for a good kitchen island or cart.“It should be solid,” he said. “Efficient in size and space, with shelving and other ways to store things. And if it has wheels, they should be gnarly wheels, not small, wimpy wheels.“And locks on the wheels are key.”Butcher-block cutting boards made by Boos are popular with chefs, so as a chef, he especially liked a kitchen cart made by the company that caught his eye at Williams-Sonoma, because of its “good-looking and sturdy” butcher-block top with “nice, thick wood,” he said. “Just remember to treat it right and oil it once a month.” Continue reading the main story

DIY Restoration Hardware finish. Craigslist table: stripped, sanded, bleached (I used a deck bleach), liming wax, glaze (two coats), clear wax. Lots of work, but I'm loving the weathered gray finish! However, I did break down --- the chairs are from RH ;) by johanna

He also liked a double kitchen island with a stone top, also from Williams-Sonoma, because it had so much storage. “It’s cool that those boxes pull out and you have drawers,” he said. (He has a lot of stuff, “so hiding clutter is key.”)

Rough-hewn salvaged wood planks, which will vary somewhat in color and grain, are carefully hand-selected, planed and lightly hand sanded Bottom shelf offers ample storage This item is artisan-crafted with meticulous care. Given its handmade and hand-finished nature, variations and imperfections in the wood are to be expected and celebrated. Each salvaged item is an original and no two pieces are exactly alike. Unfinished, unsealed salvaged wood includes distinctive nicks, splits, cracks, knots, nail holes and imperfections that speak to the wood's age and provenance. Salvaged wood will continue to change over time as it interacts with its home environment. By their nature, unsealed salvaged wood planks may be somewhat uneven and may develop small cracks and cup or bow over time due to changes in temperature or humidity. We believe this only enhances the island's rustic, unique character. A high-quality, clear furniture wax can be applied to protect the finish from minor spills. Use as directed. Note that slight variations in color and an incomplete seal may occur with any sealant; test on an inconspicuous area first. Table surface not suitable for food preparation Wipe using a soft, dry cloth. Clean spills immediately with a damp cloth. Always clean entire surface to maintain uniform finish.
